The Complete South Coast Garden Clean-Up Checklist

Work through an overgrown garden in the right order with this practical clean-up checklist for lawns, beds, hedges, paths and green waste.

1. Walk the whole property first

Identify access issues, hidden objects, steep areas, irrigation, damaged edges, overgrown paths and any work that may need a specialist. Decide where green waste will be collected before cutting begins.

2. Start with the lawn and open areas

Mow at a sensible height, edge paths and beds, and clear clippings from hard surfaces. If the lawn is extremely long, it may need a staged cut rather than one very low pass.

3. Remove weeds before they spread further

Work through garden beds, fence lines and path edges. Remove weeds before mulching so you are not simply covering active growth.

4. Shape hedges and prune overgrowth

Trim for access, shape and balance. Smaller trees and shrubs can often be tidied, but large, damaged or hazardous branches should be handled by an appropriately qualified specialist.

5. Re-establish garden edges

Clean edges make a surprisingly large difference. They separate lawn from beds, improve the sense of order and make future maintenance easier.

6. Mulch after the preparation work

Mulch should come after weeds, pruning and bed preparation. That way the finished surface is not immediately covered in cuttings.

7. Remove all green waste

A clean-up is not finished if branches, weeds and clippings remain in piles. Plan removal as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
